Realism/ Regionalism: (Emily Lee)
Buck used to Lived in sun-kissed Santa Clara, born in place full of warmth and fires. Brought to place that is fifty degrees below zero, or sometimes even seventy.
In severely cold climate, his instinct as a husky appears. He adjusted the cold quite quickly, learned to survive in the cold.
He was kidnapped to Yukon territory as sled pulling dog, in Klondike gold rush period, when every minute is worth a cent of money, no rest should be given even if the dogs are having bad conditions, including starvation, and tiredness.

Francois and Perrault followed the Southland guidance of club and fang. They were well- experienced. We can see that there is a lot of representation of regionalism from their conversations. I think these conversations not only showed their local colors, but also how comfortable they are in what they are doing after lots of experience, moreover, their conversations lots of times foreshadows about what is going to happen to Buck later in the story.
Charles and Hals are two men that came out of nowhere, they are not experienced, and had no intention as why they would buy the dogs. They keep on whipping the dogs, so that the dogs would move, and it will need experienced master to train upright dogs to pull the sled. They keep buying dogs without knowing that keeping 14 dogs is hard because of the necessity  that the 14 dogs will need in order to move forward. They showed a distinct contrast of local and foreign comparing to Francois and Perrault.

Thornton is a native to the cold, cause he was able to predict about the steadiness of the ice. I think London picked Thornton to have quality this way because since he is used to the climate, then he can bring Buck to many other places that has this kind of cold, and successfully portray not only the empathetic story of the love between Thornton and Buck, but also how Buck's instinct appeals when trying to adjust to the cold. I think the realism comes into play when Buck returned to the camp, seeing everyone's dead, including Thornton Showed that the reality is, not everything goes the way that we wish it goes, jut like Buck cannot forever stay with Thornton.

Naturalism: (Emily Lee)
In chapter 3, pg.26, it's written that Spitz never lost an opportunity to bully buck because he is threatened by Buck's tendency to take away his leadership.
They kept fighting and finally, Buck reached his goal, and became the leader of the pack after killing Spitz.

When we discuss about Naturalism, we must think about how fate affect us, and how it causes what happens in our lives. In naturalism sense, fate has the sum of heredity, environment, and chance. Also, we must take the theory of evolution into account. One of the theory that stands out the most is the theory of survival the fittest.

Let's first discuss about chance. (Takako)
In Chapter 5 pg 70, all the dogs except Buck fall into the hole, because Only Buck listened to Thornton's warning, so he survived.
This seemed to us as a chance that Buck had took, and his choice contributed to the conclusion of the story. If he didn't make the choice to listen to Thornton, then he could have fall into the hole with Charles and Hal. Then, the story will just end right there. His choice contribute to his fate of experience love, and experience having his instinct became alive again, which is to live in the wild.

Secondly, let's discuss about environment.  (Emily Lee)
When we think about environment, we should not only think about the weather but also the surrounding of a character. This first quote showed how terrible that nature had contributed to the tragedic that the crew Charles and Hals fall into the hole.  The second quote showed that Buck was influenced by his surrounding, because Spitz kept bully him, and he finally wanted nothing else, but to take over Spitz's position. Moreover, as we can see from the last quote here, the sense of theory of survival the fittest become clearer. Basically, the theory is that the strongest will survive, the weak will become extinct. Especially,"to master or be mastered", which show that the strongest will master all the weak. If you ever show mercy to someone, then you become weak. Lastly, to kill or be killed, it is very clear from the quote that survival the fittest is a big theory behind the story.

Lastly, let's discuss about heredity. (Emily Lee)
We can see heredity plays in Buck's life almost throughout the whole story. In the beginning, Buck was almost always living in places that is not his natural environment, until he was kidnapped. He was brought to where he belongs to. He adjust to the climate very fast, not only because he learns fast, but also because of his instinct, he belongs here, he has the gene to adjust to the condition he is living in. We also know that he is half St. Bernard and half Shepard dog. He not only have the intelligence of both his dad and mom, but also the instinct to live in the wild. He conquered Spitz because he had a great quality to fight and fight with head, these qualities also helped him to eventually become the head of the wolve's group in the end of the story.
