Terry Fox- Marathon of Hope for cancer

Terry was born on July, 28th, 1958 into an athletic family. He enjoyed playing long games. He was inspired by his coach to join cross-country running. He loves basketball, but he was not the best player among his classmate. However, he never gave up his hobby and keep on practicing how to play basketball. He got better and better after practicing, and he was also a good student who graduated with only one B and all As. He continue to play basketball in Simon Fraser University, but unfortunately on March 9, 1977, he found out he had a tumor in his right knee, so he needed to amputate his right leg. He had to face this new challenge to stand up with an artificial leg. After 16 months of suffering for recovering his right leg, he started to have this idea to build up a meaningful event for cancer research. He never gives up in practicing how to walk with the artificial leg without his family knowing his idea. He started his Marathon of Hope on April 12, 1980. He started out his journey from St. John, Newfoundland. He set 40 km as his minimmum length everyday. On September 1, 1980, around Thunder Bay, he started to feel a serious pain in his chest, which was later diagnose that the cancer had spread to his lung. He had done his journey up to 5373 km in 143 days, but he can no longer keep the journey goes on. When he knows about his sickness, he said to himself, "I'm gonna do my very best. I'll fight. I promise I won't give up." After suffering for 10 months, he unfortunately passed away. He was given many awards for projects that he done which were very impressive. These awards including the Order of Canada; Newsmaker of the Year; the Lou Marsh trophy.

Terry Fox was an aluminum of Simon Fraser University in Burnaby. He is forever remember in all Canadiense's heart for what he had done. In fact, he is the hero of all cancer patient. His foundation, the Terry Fox foundation had raised 550 million US dollars for cancer research around the world. Think about how many cancer patient may have survived because of his Marathon of Hope? His braveness that no one can compare, and his effort that no one can wipe away. He was so brave that he forgot about his pain and ran 26 miles a day with an artificial leg. His statue is still shinning bright and meaningful in SFU for what he had accomplish, which even non-sick people could not easily achieve. According to Stephen Harman, who carved Terry's statue, they carved it for five weeks, 18 hours a day, seven days a week. Even if Harman got tired, he kept go on, because he believed that Terry Fox had suffer more than he did, and he must spread Terry Fox brave accomplishment and message to everyone who see the statue. Terry Fox's spirit kept Harman keep going on, and he also inspired many people around the world to never give up, even if the situation that the person is facing seem so horrible and no where to go, but you just have to keep moving on, and never give up.

He was an ordinary young man, who enjoys life playing around like any other kids. He loves playing long games of table-hockey, toy soldiers, sports like hockey and baseball. He was raised with good manner, rules, and behave well in his family. Doug Alward was Terry's friend, because they have a lot of common. Doug is good in basketball and cross-country running, however, Terry was not such a player. McGill was Terry's P.E. Teacher, who suggested Terry to join cross-coutry running. Terry did not have much interest in running. He found running is a very exhausting sport, but he found it fun to accomplish how much he had to run and rewarded to be call "man" from his coach. He was the worst player on the basketball team, however, he just would not give up and keep practicing. He shared many memorable memories with Doug for all his school life. He practiced basketball with Doug during summer. He also go to school early and go back home late for basketball practice. These practices paid off, he become better and better in the team. He and Doug was average student in academic, but they did made to the honor roll a few times. Doug was Terry 's competition and the person who motivate Terry to study hard. He tried hard in everything he does. He has good memorization that got himself couple As and one B when he graduated from high school. He wanted to be a P.E. Teacher, so he chose to study kinesiology. His patient and hard working was a benefit for him, which helped him made it into his basketball team in collage.

He thinks positively on everything. He did not mind at all that he got cancer. He did not care that he had to run with one artificial leg. He did not run for fame but for all cancer patient. He loves to dream big, he does not think there is something that is impossible. He started something, and he wanted to finish his goal no matter what. He believe just trying is a big step to achieve his goal, nothing is impossible.
