You can be a winner, or you can be a loser, but you cannot be both, unless you are on BIGGEST LOSER.
Some characters in the Twelfth Nights went through the entire play gaining nothing, and some even made their lives worse.
Here is the basic idea of the relationships between the characters:
Countdown of Losers:
3. Andrew Aguecheek (a.k.a. the Sick Face)
I think he should be loser #3 because he went through the entire play, still ended up with no wife, which was kind of the intention of him even being in the play. Not only does he and up with no wife, but also he got himself in trouble to fake fight for one. Moreover, he have always been the "pet" of Tony Belch. He always buy drinks for him, and he never realized how big of an entertainer is he among his friends. He got himself in trouble by writing the "competition" letter to Cessario as Tony requested him. He got himself into a worse trouble by mistaken Cessario with Sebastian and was repaid with a hard punch on his face. Even though he might have gotten some "love notes" throughout the play, yet, he is still not wise enough to use those to get himself a wife.
2. Antonio (a.k.a. the guy that seemed to have "something" for Sebastian)
I think he should be loser #2 because he was just a crazy fan over Sebastian, who will never be able to end up with him for the rest of his life. He did not gain anything from the play. He was so in love with Sebastian that he was willing to offer him his wallet. Yet, heartbroken when he asked for his wallet back from Cessario, and she answered, "I can lend you some, though". Moreover, he was caught by his enemy Orsino only because he wanted to protect "Sebastian". I think he is a bigger loser than Andrew Aguecheek because all in all, he is a wise dude, yet was willing to do all these insane things for Sebastian for no repays. <The point is, did Sebastian ever returned him his wallet?!>
1. Malvolio (a.k.a. I'm NOT CRAZY guy)
Needless to say, Malvolio has to be the TOTALLY OFF-THE-HOOK LOSER of this play. He went from this disciplined gentleman to a "chase you" guy all because of this ONE UNCONFIRMED LOVE LETTER from "Olivia". The yellow-stockings with the cross-garter is probably the greatest prove of him being the biggest loser. More importantly, only a loser like him would not recognize his lady's handwriting, writing tone, and her tastes after all these years of working under her. I mean, even teachers that only know us for one month can tell a person's writing tone. Also, that Sir Topas part was absolutely another part of why he is the biggest loser. I'M NOT CRAZY!! Scream and shout all you want, because you are the LOSER.
Countdown of Winners:
3. Viola/Cessario (a.k.a. the lady that looks good in a suit)
Viola/ Cessario is one of the winners that did not lose anything, gained something, and pretty much satisfied at the end of the play. She reached her goal by the end. She won Orsino, and to add to the excitement, she united with Sebastian! Throughout the entire play, her only minor lost was her beautiful long hair, and the crazy attack by the "chase me, chase me" Olivia. All in all, she got what she wanted, and that made her a winner.
2. Toby Belch (a.k.a. drunk dude)
Sir Toby is pretty much a winner in this play, because again he lose nothing, but had a nice wife that he likes by the end of the play. He went from this crazy drunk dude who is always messing around to the guy that is smart enough to trick Malvolio into an insane guy. Moreover, Sir Toby finally settled down a little bit after his marriage with Maria. Therefore, he is a winner in the play.
1. Sebastian (a.k.a. "if this is a dream, don't wake me up" dude)
I think Sebastian is the biggest winner of the play. He did not really work for anything, yet he gets everything good. First, he has this crazy fan Antonio who follows him everywhere and somehow like a servant to him, who is willing to do whatever for him. Second, Antonio offered him his wallet for no reason. Third, there is this crazy fine-looking lady, Olivia came up to him and saved him from the fight, and eventually offer herself to him. Lastly, his lost sister returned. It is like winning the lottery. He did not even do anything to deserve what he gets, yet he still did by the end of the play.
And your biggest loser and winner are.....
