TED talk!!

"Each and everyone of us has a vital part to play in building the kind of world, in which government and technology serve the world's people and not the other way around."-Rebecca MacKinnon

TED talk Rebecca MacKinnon: Let's take back the Internet!

http://www.ted.com/talks/rebecca_mackinnon_let_s_take_back_the_internet.html

In this TED talk, Rebecca explained how the Internet society comes between citizens and government nowadays. She argues that we needed innovation in the Internet society in order to improve the citizen's life instead of being taken away their rights and freedom on the Internet by the government.
I think in the beginning, the attention getter that she used was quite a successful attention getter for me, and I thought it is was of the example of pathos. She motivated us to listen by showing us the large company Apple's commercial about Mac in 1984. Many people know about Apple, and surely they have different views on Apple. However, the point is not about Apple's Mac, it is more about what the man said in the advertisement. He said that we all have this strong sense, solid goal so that we will win the enemy. These words are so strong and powerful that made me wonder what would Rebecca back up with the commercial and how will her talk related to Apple. I believe this is a kind of pathos that she used in her talk. According to the description box in the TED app for this talk, Rebecca herself is an expert to the Chinese Internet censorship. This is surely a ethos in a sense that she knows her material better than her audience. She first brought out the idea that government banning some specific political apps on the App store. We are living in a democracy world, however, we are still sort of under the control of our government taking away our freedom to view things on the Internet. She explained why she thought that Internet society is a private government by itself, because of the fact that human has the right to communication, as long as it won't hurt others, publishers on the Internet could do whatever they want and changed the reality. Some serious examples that she brought out were rebellion motives started on Facebook, Twitter, and other Internet social network.  She also brought up some interesting sayings from famous Internet social network manager. One of them is the google manager, Woal Ghonim saying," If you want to liberate a society, just give them Internet." This is a statement that showed us about pathos, which gives us some emotions and to think about what Internet is worth for us. All of the above listed that she have brought out clearly showed ethos in her talk. She is absolutely the expert on this topic, so there is no doubt to her research, and the great ethos examples she used in her speech to support her argument. Last but not least, her conclusion used a very strong logos, which I personally really liked about her speech. "Each and everyone of us has a vital part to play in building the kind of world, in which government and technology serve the world's people and not the other way around." This is not only an example for logos but also pathos. It used true and valid logic, and created an emotional feeling in the audience heart that tells us that it is time to change in a way to help ourselves.
